Kaposi's Sarcoma

Kaposi's Sarcoma is a vascular tumor that appears mostly in the skin, but may appear anywhere in the body.  It is a cancer that develops from the cells that line the blood vessels.  KS is a virally induced human cancer and is caused by the herpes virus type 8.

KS usually manifests as a skin lesion. The lesions begin as flat, or raised, purple or red colored spots.  These lesions are asymptomatic and can develop anywhere on the body, but more often on the lower extremities.  The lesions can also develop on mucous membranes and internal organs.  KS can cause serious problems when the tumors are in the lungs, liver, or digestive tract.
